Almost every digital camera will use a memory card to store pictures. The most common type is SD (Secure Digital), which are reasonably cheap today. The advantage of using an SD memory card is that this type of card is fast becoming the favoured card for all other device types such as laptops, cameras, mobile phones, PDA's and almost any other type of media device.
Memory Card TypesMemory Card technology is moving along fast. This is tomorrows technology made available today!
Always go for a camera that uses either SD or XD picture cards. SD card are rapidly becoming the most popular memory card as they are used in many other devices, such as PDA's, laptops and many more. This will eventually mean that may become cheaper to buy. The xD card is only used in digital cameras and is smaller than the SD card. Prices are slightly higher than for equivalent SD card. Get the largest card you can afford. The camera will usually come with a 16Mb card, which is no use to man or beast. The CompactFlash card is another type of memory card, but is physically larger than the both the SD or XD cards. They are becoming less popular in small compact cameras. These cards are used mostly in large very expensive digital cameras such as the Canon EOS range. Other large cameras like Olympus, Nikon, Minolta and some camcorders may also favour these cards. These cards are the memory card giants with giant capacities as well. CompactFlash Type II The CompactFlash Type II card is special, it is really a micro hard drive as they have a moving disk inside just a normal computer hard drive and card is exactly the same size as the CompactFlash Type I card. The CompactFlash card specification version 3.0 supports data rates up to 66MB/sec and capacities up to 137GB!, although the current technology level peaks at around 12Gb in 2007. Nevertheless, this memory card type, because of its capacity, will be around for some time to come I think. Micro SD memory cards allow you to store media rich content on your mobile phone and other digital devices. You can easily store masses of data such as MP3 music files, Photographs and Video. Micro-sd memory cards are made to the highest standards and mostly come with a long manufacturers warranty. With 1GB Micro-SD cards available today, the Micro-SD cards are great for storing lots of data on your mobile phone whether it be images, music, video or just text files. Due to their simple and small packaging Memory 2 Go Micro-SD cards are some of the most affordable in the market. The memory cards themselves though are made to the highest standards and come with a 5 year manufacturers warranty. They also come with a standard sized SD card adaptor so that you can use the micro sd card in a standard SD card device such as a digital camera. One of the world’s most popular memory card formats for your mobile phone. The Mini-SD card provides all of the same functions as a full-size SD including built-in security for copyrighted content along with great performance for storing music, video, and photographs for use on-the-go. A Mini SD card provides the broadest range of capacities for the mobile phone. Digital Camera Memory Card CapacityThe table below will give some idea on digital photograph storage capacity. The MegaPixel versus the Megabyte.
The Memory Card can vary in size from about 16 MB to 4GB or more. When it comes to adding more capacity, you should consider a 128MB card as a great starting point. Fake Memory CardsThere are an unbelievable amount of fake memory cards out there. eBay has become notorious for fake memory card sales, literally thousands of people have been scammed by sellers who are selling inferior or lower capacity cards that have been relabelled and re-packaged to look like the real thing. So you have been warned!, as they say, let the buyer beware. I recommend that you purchase your memory card only from reputable online vendors or highstreet shops. If you must buy on eBay then check out this page at Overclockers.com.au for ways to visually identify some (not all) of the most popular fake cards. There Can Be Only One !In the end there can be only one memory card! At the moment I think the SD memory card is in the lead.
